Once in a while I'm compelled to do western themes. I did the pencil sketch for this one out of a series of cowboys and horses almost a year ago. It's painted in Photoshop, and the painting took between 3-1/2 and 4 hours.

I've been trying to to find a stylized language that is somewhat personal. Here the largely unrendered flat areas of color are the biggest departure from my usual work. I'm pretty happy with the result here.
Comments and crit welcome.

Character Concept: Cowboy

I've been trying to spend more time on my personal work, and not just work for my employer. Here's the latest; a scanned pencil drawing, painted with Photoshop CS2, 2-1/2 hrs.

Tonal composition and lighting have been my main concern lately. With this piece in particular I was also trying to allow something of a personal style to come through.

I'm satisfied with this painting and look forward to hear the feedback of this community.

It's a scanned pencil drawing, painted in Photoshop CS2. I used a few custom brushes for the slight texture on the background and for modeling parts of his skin, but mostlly I used default brushes.

Of course comments an crits are welcome. Please! Especially if you have any feedback on the consistencey of quality in my portfolio. I know it's not where I want it to be yet, so all pointers are welcome.

I did not have anything in mind when this painting got started, simply a sketch of the main character that I liked. Everything else evolved and changed quite a bit around him.

At the time there was a Ballistic Publishing submission deadline for one of the books a few weeks away. I decided to give myself the challenge of meeting that deadline.

Techhnically speaking, I work with a Wacom tablet on a G5. It was my first Photoshop (CS) painting where I intended from the beginning to do a fully rendered black and white underpainting, and color over that. It was a technicque I had learned about only a few weeks before, and my early dabbles with it prooved promissing.

I only used reference for the background, and some leaves photographs for ground texture.

When the deadline came around, I was not entirely happy with the image, and rushed to do some motion blur to hopefully add some dynamism to the image.

Months later I revisited the painting. First I took most of the generic blur off, and re colored the forest. Originally the forest was WAY too green.

I had thought it added to the fantasy feel, but it didn't help give the forest a moon-lit feel.

I made quick progress after that change, but felt it wasn't together yet. For weeks I'd thought of adding the campfire, but I don't know why I waited so long to add it. As soon as I did, everything clicked. And this is the resulting image.

While I still like the image, I wonder if the mix of stylization and realism works. Sometimes it feels a bit cluttered, but I think that works in favor of the stress of the situation.

All feedback is welcome.

Spores Character Concept

This all-Photoshop concept shows the main character from an original an dindependent project with his pet/friend creature.

Back when I did this about a year ago my focus was on developing a painterly style. It shows good progress from the stuff I'd been doing before, but looking at it now it's not nearly where I'd like to be. Comments and suggestions on developing a more panterly approach would be much appreciated.

These days my focus has broadened to also include been on page design and tonal composition. I think this image has a certain strength in those areas, though I'm sure it can be improved. Again, crits and suggestions are weelcome.

Strating on March 2005 I revisited an original story idea that has been in gestation for some 15 years. The whole concept revolves around an almost extinct species that reproduces by spores without need of intercourse, or even physical contact. Developing the story around such a society has been a challenge to say the least.

This is one of a handful of concept illustrations I did in summer 2005.

It's 95% Photoshop, with minimal pencil drawing half way through the process for tightening the foreground figure.

I had made a drawing of the main characters in my sketchbook while I was flying back home from somewhere. I liked the drawing immediately and wanted to develop it into a digital painting. Unfortunately things got busy, and I never did. Until last summer, when I had been applying some newly learned Photoshop paiting techniques that I was eager to try with this image.

I first added the dungeon setting, and the monsters. I liked the idea of these adventurers finding themselves in a bind right at the edge (entance/exit) of the dungeon. I thought the lighting challenge was interesting and could make for a great image. At first glance the painting satisfies my vision for it, but it doesn't hold up to any serious scrutiny in my opinion. The monsters and the fire just don't seem to be in the same room with the two figures.

All feedback is welcome.
I have never been satisfied with this image. Too much of it is too realistic for the stylized face. I think it needs to go more in one direction or the other.

Technically speaking it's very much like the others, pencil drawing, painted in Photoshop CS with a Wacom tablet.
